RADAR-Canada (Respecting Accuracy in Domestic Abuse Reporting) Note to the reader: This
website is just beginning construction; please check from time to time for
updates. Meanwhile you can read here about our mission and basic concerns, and
contact us to inquire about our efforts. Radar-Canada is an organization of
Canadian academics and professionals with expertise of various kinds relating to
abuse in the family. Like similar groups in other countries, we have come
together to address a specific inequity in how that serious societal problem is
standardly dealt with. For years, public discourse on this subject has promoted
the stereotype that only men, or virtually only men, are evil enough to be
abusive in the home; women are always just innocent victims. Yet during those
same years, huge amounts of scientific research have established that equal
numbers of men and women are abusive to their partners and children. Though many
have gone along with the false attitudes in ignorance, many others have, for
transparent ideological reasons, deliberately hidden and distorted the facts of
family abuse. The consequences of this stereotyping have
been very serious, in the justice system and social services and elsewhere. If
the same kinds of discrimination were today being practiced toward women, or
Jews, or native peoples or other minorities, they would be universally condemned
and immediately rooted out. It must be stressed, however, that individual men
are only the direct victims of this discrimination. Because of the intimate
interrelations among people, women and especially children are also seriously
being harmed by this kind of anti-male bias.
